Meir are a small, friendly club based at the John Marston pub in Blurton. We are affiliated to the North Staffs & District Chess Association and the Staffordshire Chess Association. We currently have 1 team playing in Divsion 4 of the North Staffs League and also enter various local and County Cup competitions. New members of whatever age and ability are always very welcome.
The Club was originally known as Creda Chess Club but, following a change of venue, became Caverswall Chess Club in 2006. Following a move to the Royal British Legion in Normacot in 2007 we adopted the name of Meir Chess Club, which we are still known as until this day. Unfortunately, crcumstances forced the Royal British Legion to close down in June 2024 and we moved to the John Marston pub in Blurton, where we are based today.
League and Cup success has, for the most part, eluded us in recent years, although we won the newly resurrected NSDCA Division 5 in 2013/2014. Our most successful period was in the early part of the millennium when, playing as Creda, we won the Jackson Cup in 2002 and the Withnall Trophy in 2003. Both of these competitions are County Cups. In the more local NSDCA cup competitions we won the Major Cup in 2001/2002 and the Intermediate Cup in 2002/2003.
As well as playing in the North Staffs League we played in the Derby & District League, as Creda, between 2002 and 2006, winning Division 3 in 2002/2003 and Division 2 in 2003/2004. We spent one season in Division 1 in 2004/2005 before being relegated back to Division 2. We were runners-up in Division 2 in 2005/2006, winning promotion back to Division 1. However, we withdrew from the league before the season started.
